The leak hit global networks like a thunderclap.
“Awakened Same-Sex Couples Can Reproduce Biologically,” the headline read. Beneath it, a photo of Cashel and Leonidas—arms around each other, Ari nestled between them—circulated like wildfire.
The world reacted instantly.
Some called it a miracle. Others called it a threat.
Religious leaders condemned it. Scientists scrambled to verify Dante Virelli’s research. Politicians debated emergency legislation. Social media fractured into celebration and panic.
And at the heart of it all stood Cashel and Leonidas.
They watched the coverage from their apartment, Ari asleep on the couch, her small body curled beneath a blanket stitched with kinetic thread.
“They’re afraid,” Cashel said quietly.
Leonidas nodded. “Because they can’t control what they don’t understand.”
Governments convened emergency councils. The idea of Multi-Awakened reproduction—of powers being passed down, potentially amplified—was too much for some to stomach. Proposals surfaced: registration, monitoring, even sterilization.
Cashel’s comm buzzed.
His sister, Liora, appeared on screen, her face pale and drawn.
“I saw the news,” she said. “I’m not calling to judge. I’m calling because I’m scared.”
Cashel’s throat tightened. “Scared of me?”
“No,” she whispered. “Scared for you. You’re already a target. Now they’ll come for you harder. And if you and Leonidas ever… have a child…”
Cashel nodded. “I know.”
Leonidas received a message too—this one from his younger brother, Milo.
It had been over a year since Milo last reached out. After Leonidas Awakened, Milo had pulled away, overwhelmed by fear and resentment. Their parents tried to bridge the gap, but Milo had refused to speak to Leonidas directly.
Now, his message was different.
“I saw the broadcast,” Milo wrote. “I used to think you stopped being my brother when you Awakened. I thought you were dangerous. But seeing you with that little girl… seeing how you protect her… I get it now. You didn’t change. You just became more of who you are. I’m sorry. I want to talk.”
Leonidas stared at the message for a long time before replying.
“I never stopped being your brother,” he wrote. “I’m glad you’re ready.”
But the world wasn’t.
The media twisted the photo of Ari between Cashel and Leonidas, wrongfully suggesting she was their biological child. The backlash was swift and cruel.
“She’s the child the Sovereign Veil wanted,” one broadcast claimed. “Is she the first Multi-Awakened offspring?”
“She’s not their child,” another pundit argued. “But they’re using her to push their agenda.”
The worst came from conspiracy circles.
“They faked her cocooning. She’s a lab-grown weapon.”
Cashel was furious.
“She’s a child,” he snapped during a press briefing. “Her parents were murdered. She’s grieving. And now you’re turning her into a headline.”
Leonidas stood beside him, hand on his shoulder. “We won’t let them take her.”
At Unit 7’s next briefing, the team gathered around the central table. Rhea stood at the head, her expression unreadable.
“This changes everything,” she said. “Not just for Cashel and Leonidas. For all of us.”
Tamsin, usually silent, spoke up. “If we can have families… maybe we’re not just weapons anymore.”
Milo Reyes grinned. “I’ve always wanted a kid who could hack satellites with their mind.”
They laughed, but the weight lingered.
Four new members joined Unit 7 that week:
- Juno Kade: Power—audiokinesis. Calm, analytical, with a background in diplomacy.
- Ravi Chen: Power—magnetic field manipulation. Former engineer, fiercely protective.
- Sage Moreno: Power—empathic projection. Gentle, intuitive, a natural with children.
- Kellan Stroud: Power—density shifting. Blunt, loyal, and battle-hardened.
They were briefed on the Sovereign Veil, the reproductive revelations, and Ari.
The government wanted Ari placed in a secure facility.
Cashel refused.
“She’s not a case file,” he said. “She’s a child. She needs stability. She needs love.”
Leonidas backed him. “She stays with us. At least until we know she’s safe.”
That night, Ari’s powers emerged.
She woke screaming, the air around her vibrating. Objects floated, then shattered. Her eyes glowed violet, her skin pulsed with energy.
Cashel rushed to her, kneeling beside the bed. “Ari, breathe. You’re okay.”
Leonidas activated the dampening field. Sage joined them, projecting calm.
Cashel held Ari close, whispering soft words, guiding her through the surge.
Eventually, the energy faded.
Ari sobbed into his chest. “I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Cashel said. “It’s not your fault. It’s your gift. And we’ll help you control it.”
The next morning, Ari sat between Cashel and Leonidas at breakfast, her powers stable, her smile tentative.
Unit 7 watched from across the room.
They weren’t just a strike team anymore.
They were a sanctuary.
And as the world debated their existence, their future, their right to love and build—
They chose to fight.
Not just for survival.
But for legacy.
