The Chrysalis Project’s first public event was held in the heart of New Geneva—a city rebuilt from the ashes of the old world, now a gleaming symbol of Awakened-human cooperation. The venue was a glass-domed atrium, suspended above a bioluminescent lake, with media drones humming like insects overhead.

Cashel adjusted the collar of his tailored jacket, the fabric laced with kinetic thread to help regulate his powers. His tattoos shimmered faintly beneath the fabric—his phoenix pulsing with warmth, the constellation on his forearm glowing like starlight. He felt exposed, even in a room full of people who claimed to support him.

Leonidas stood beside him, dressed in black, his serpent tattoo coiled around his bicep like a living thing. He looked calm, unreadable as always, but Cashel could feel the tension in his posture.

They were here to speak. To show the world that multi-Awakened weren’t monsters or weapons—they were people. Partners. Protectors.

But the world had other plans.

As they mingled with diplomats, scientists, and fellow Awakened, a woman approached. Tall, striking, with obsidian skin and eyes like molten gold. Her name was Sariah, and she was an Awakened diplomat from the African Coalition. Her power was pheromone manipulation—subtle, intoxicating.

She placed a hand on Leonidas’s arm, her voice a velvet purr. “You must be Leonidas. I’ve heard stories… but none of them do you justice.”

Cashel stiffened.

Leonidas offered a polite smile. “I’m flattered.”

Sariah leaned in closer. “If you ever want to see how we do things in Nairobi, I’d be happy to give you a private tour.”

Cashel cleared his throat. Loudly.

Sariah turned, eyes raking over him. “And you must be the Chimera.”

“It’s Cashel,” he said, voice cool. “And he’s taken.”

Sariah smirked. “For now.”

Leonidas gently stepped between them, placing a hand on Cashel’s lower back. “We’re here to work, Sariah.”

She winked and drifted away.

Cashel exhaled. “She’s lucky I didn’t melt her shoes.”

Leonidas chuckled. “Jealousy looks good on you.”

Minutes later, Leonidas was pulled aside by a security officer. Cashel wandered toward the refreshment table, trying to shake off the tension. That’s when he appeared.

Tall, broad-shouldered, with a smile that could melt steel. His name tag read Dante Virelli, a tech mogul and Awakened investor.

“You’re even more stunning in person,” Dante said, offering Cashel a drink. “I’ve been following your story. The world’s first confirmed quad-type. You’re rewriting history.”

Cashel took the glass but didn’t drink. “I’m not a headline.”

“No,” Dante said, stepping closer. “You’re a revolution. And revolutions need allies.”

He brushed a hand against Cashel’s arm—just as Leonidas returned.

The air shifted.

Leonidas’s eyes narrowed. “Problem?”

Dante smiled, unbothered. “Just admiring the future.”

Cashel stepped back beside Leonidas. “The future’s spoken for.”

The tension was broken by a sudden explosion of static across the venue’s comms. A hologram flickered to life above the stage.

A masked figure appeared; voice distorted. “To the world’s governments: your obsession with the multi-Awakened ends now. They are not your saviors. They are ours.”

The feed cut. Panic rippled through the crowd.

Later, in the debriefing room beneath the venue, Unit 7 gathered.

  • Captain Rhea Lin: Team leader, power—tactical foresight. Calm, calculating, always three steps ahead.
  • Milo Reyes: Tech specialist, power—data absorption. Young, cocky, brilliant.
  • Tamsin Vale: Recon, power—shadow phasing. Quiet, deadly, loyal to Leonidas.
  • Cashel and Leonidas: Now officially co-leads.

The threat was clear: a rogue faction of Awakened calling themselves The Sovereign Veil. Their goal? To liberate all Awakened from human control—and to weaponize the multi-Awakened as symbols of power.

“They’re targeting you,” Rhea said, eyes on Cashel. “You’re the spark they want to ignite a war.”

Cashel looked at Leonidas. “Then we put out the fire before it spreads.”

Later that night, Cashel sat on the rooftop of their safehouse, the city lights flickering below. Leonidas joined him, silent for a while.

“You, okay?” he asked.

Cashel nodded. “I just… I don’t want to be a symbol. I want to be seen. As me.”

Leonidas took his hand. “Then we show them. Every mission. Every word. Every time we stand together.”

Cashel leaned into him, the weight of the world pressing down—but no longer alone.

They were more than power.

They were a promise.

And they would not be broken.
