The Temple of Thorns pulsed with ancient magic, and Seraphine could feel it in her bones.

Kael stood beside her, silent as ever, his silver hair catching the moonlight. He had led her here, not with words, but with instinct. The moment she touched the altar, her tattoos shimmered, and the forest seemed to breathe with her.

“You’re connected to more than just the earth,” Kael said, his voice low. “You’re elemental. But there’s something else… something deeper.”

Seraphine closed her eyes and reached inward. The ground beneath her feet warmed. The wind curled around her wrists. Her breath stirred the flame etched into her shoulder, and it flickered with light.

Earth. Air. Fire.

But then something colder stirred. A whisper beneath the surface. A shadow that didn’t belong to any element.

“What is that?” she asked, trembling.

Kael’s jaw tightened. “That… I don’t know.”

Kael trained her in the woods, away from prying eyes. He taught her to listen—to feel the pulse of the world, not command it. Her powers were raw, wild, and beautiful. She could summon flame with a thought, bend branches with a glance, and call wind to her fingertips.

But the shadow inside her grew stronger.

It wasn’t elemental. It was something older. Something buried.

Kael didn’t push. He watched. Protected. And when she collapsed from exhaustion, he carried her without a word.

The ground trembled before he appeared.

Ronan stepped into the clearing like a storm incarnate—tall, golden-eyed, and furious. His presence was heat and fury, and the trees bent away from him.

“She’s not yours, Wolf,” Ronan growled, eyes locked on Kael.

Kael stepped forward, teeth bared. “She’s not yours either.”

Seraphine stood between them, heart pounding. “I’m not a prize.”

Ronan’s gaze softened—just slightly. “You’re the flame. You belong with me.”

Before Kael could respond, shadows curled at the edge of the clearing.

Lucien emerged from the dark like a whisper—elegant, pale, and cruelly beautiful. His black robes shimmered with runes, and his eyes glowed with arcane light.

“You all sound like children,” he said, voice smooth as silk. “The prophecy binds us all. She’s not yours. She’s ours.”

Seraphine’s breath caught. “What does that even mean?”

Lucien stepped closer, his gaze piercing. “It means your soul is the axis. We orbit you. Protect you. Need you.”

Ronan growled. Kael bristled. Lucien smiled.

Back in town, the couple who raised Seraphine felt the shift.

The binding spells they’d used for years had cracked. The iron around her bed rusted. The salt lines dissolved. And the journal she’d found—the one they’d hidden—was gone.

Her “mother” screamed. Her “father” drank.

They knew she’d awakened. They knew she’d found the Temple.

And they knew the Pact would come for her.

They had kept her hidden for seventeen years. Now, the magic they feared was loose. And the girl they’d tried to break… was becoming something they couldn’t control.
